Day 356/365 of Steel – The Forest Tower

Inauguration of the Camp Adventure Forest Tower on March 30, 2019

The Forest Tower was designed by EFFEKT with an ambition to create an aesthetically beautiful building and a unique experience with nature in focus. The iconic architecture of the Forest Tower is inextricably linked to the hourglass shape, which is drawn from a cylindrical shape, where the bottom and top are maximized, while the middle is laced into a so-called hyperboloid shape. The tower owes its characteristic shape to the straight structural steel elements, which were rotated to create an efficient yet visually striking structure.

Engineers and architects also focused on optimizing the use of steel, successfully executed by means of a digitally-driven process that helped determine the optimal height of 45 m. The spiraling ramp to the observation deck also benefits from the hyperbolic shape.

While keeping a fixed gradient, the geometry and spacing of the ramp fluctuate according to the changing curvature. The ramp becomes a sculptural element that makes the journey to the top a unique experience of shifting intimacy while offering step-free access to all visitors.

The idea behind the elevated boardwalk leading to the tower is to make the forest accessible to everyone without disrupting the natural environment. To achieve this, the tower was constructed from weathered steel and locally sourced oak, to blend in subtly with the surrounding natural context. The Forest Tower has won several architecture awards and has been nominated for the EU Architecture Award, the Mies van der Rohe Award, in 2022.
