This tool calculates the weight of structural steel sections and plate from a multi-item cut list. Add as many items as needed, select the profile type and size, enter the length and quantity, and the tool instantly returns the weight per item and the running total for the whole list.
It covers all standard European hot-rolled sections and hollow sections, as well as flat bar, round bar, square bar, and custom plate with user-defined width and thickness.
Section masses for hot-rolled profiles — IPE, HEA, HEB, HEM, UPN, and equal-leg angles — are taken from EN 10365:2017, which is the current European standard for the dimensional and mass properties of hot-rolled steel sections.
Hollow section masses for square hollow sections (SHS), rectangular hollow sections (RHS), and circular hollow sections (CHS) are taken from EN 10219-2:2006 (cold-formed) and EN 10210-2:2006 (hot-finished).
Plate weight is calculated directly from the user-supplied width and thickness using a steel density of 7,850 kg/m³, which is the value specified in EN 1991-1-1 (Eurocode 1) for structural steel.
CO₂ estimates are based on a factor of 1.46 kg CO₂e per kg of steel, the global average figure published by the World Steel Association for basic oxygen steelmaking. This is an indicative value for early-stage carbon assessments.
HOW TO USE THIS TOOL
Each row in the cut list represents one line item. For each row, select the profile type from the first dropdown, then select the specific section size from the second dropdown. The mass per metre (kg/m) is filled in automatically.
Enter the cut length in metres and the quantity. The tool calculates the item weight (kg/m × length) and the total weight for that line (item weight × quantity).
For plate, select “Plate” as the type. Instead of a section dropdown, two fields appear for width and thickness in millimetres. The mass per metre is calculated automatically from those dimensions and the steel density.
The summary bar at the bottom of the screen shows the running totals across all rows: total weight in kilograms, total weight in tonnes, estimated CO₂ in kg CO₂e, and total piece count. It updates live as you edit any row.
Use the project name field in the header to add a reference — it appears above the table when you print.
Click Print to open a print-ready version of the cut list in a new window. The print layout includes the project name, date, summary totals, and the full table — formatted for A4 landscape and suitable for attaching to a fabrication package or material requisition.
Click + Add item to add a new row. Click the × button at the end of any row to remove it. Click Clear to reset the entire list.
